Kids Activities - Rainbow Pot of Gold

Making chains in rainbow colors is an excellent way to introduce your child to Roy G. Biv and help kids develop hand-eye coordination. See if she can continue the pattern and make a long chain to drape across the wall for a fine holiday decoration. It's doesn't hurt to have a pot of gold waiting at each end!

What You Need:

• Colored construction paper
• Tape or stapler
• Hot glue gun
• Loose change or fake coins
• Gold glitter glue (optional)

 

 

 

 

What You Do:

1. Have your child cut strips of construction paper out of all the colors of the rainbow. When she has an assortment of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet strips, she can take one and bend it into a ring.
2. Close the end of the loop with tape or a staple.
3. Next, insert another strip inside the first loop and tape or staple the end closed. This will create the first link of the rainbow chain.
4. Want to follow a rainbow pattern? Use the handy name Roy G. Biv to remember the first letter of each color. Continue making this rainbow chain as long as you wish for a wall decoration.
5. Have your child sketch two pots of gold on black construction paper, and cut them out.
6. Now she can glue on some coins, and add some glitter on top for extra sparkle.
7. End each side of your chain with a black loop and glue the pots on each end.
8. Hang this lucky rainbow chain as a St. Patrick's Day decoration in your home.
